How Should I Read The Bible?

If you like, you can read the Bible the way you would read any other book: start at the beginning (Genesis) and read until the end (Revelation). Lots of people have done that and still read through the Bible every year from beginning to end.

However, that may not be the best way for you. Perhaps you could read Genesis, the first book of the Bible, then read the first four books of the New Testament-Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These are called “the Gospels” and their primary purpose is to tell us about Jesus. Mark is the shortest Gospel, while John includes some foundational verses like John 3:16.

You can also follow a reading plan. Lots of these are available in print and online, or you can devise your own. However you do it, read a section, think about what it says, what it means, and how it may apply to you. You may want to pray a simple prayer before you read, something like, “God, please guide me in my reading today and let me see and understand the things You are saying to me.”

You may also find it helpful to join together with one or two other people who are reading the Bible and compare notes. Keep a notebook or pad nearby and jot down (type in) any thoughts and questions that may arise as you read. Think about these later on. Talk them over with others.
